Meet Baljit

As a child, I was captivated by the stories people carried, the challenges they faced, and the remarkable resilience of the human spirit. I wanted to understand why we respond to life as we do, how our experiences shape the way we see ourselves and others, and what enables us to heal and grow.

Where the Story begins

Trauma was woven into the fabric of my family history, long before I had the language to understand it.

Born in India, both my parents Amar Singh Kamal and Barkha Rani, survived the Partition of India. Their lives were shaped by displacement, uncertainty and the experience of having survival imprinted in their existence.

Years later, they would leave again. Only this time to be further away in a foreign country in completely unfamiliar territory; in England.

Embracing opportunity, vitality and possibility, they carried with them a determination to make something meaningful from the life that remained. It was almost as though surviving had given them a second invitation to life, and they intended to accept it wholeheartedly.

Their story revealed how migration often encompasses both grief and hope simultaneously: the sorrow of leaving one life behind and the aspiration of creating another. It demonstrates that trauma can extend across generations, but so too can resilience. And perhaps that is one of the greatest inheritances anyone can receive.

A story about me

Today, I see my work as more than a career choice. It feels like the continuation of a story that began long before I was born.

The stories of survival and rebuilding belonged to my ancestors long before I had the language to understand this, yet their echoes inevitably became part of the landscape in which my own identity was formed.

As I grew older, my curiosity shifted from asking, “what happened?” to “what happens next?” How does someone rebuild when life has changed beyond recognition?  How do we carry experiences that may have been lost, silenced, or overshadowed, without allowing them to become our entire identity?

I was shown that people can carry vulnerability and extraordinary strength simultaneously. That pain and hope can exist alongside one another, and that even after significant loss, trauma, or change, it is possible to rediscover meaning, foster connection, and cultivate a renewed sense of belonging. Today, this understanding forms the foundation of both who I am and how I work with others.

I feel privileged to sit alongside people as they begin to understand their own stories, reconnect with themselves and discover that what happened to them may be part of their story, but it does not have to be the end of it. And perhaps, in helping others make sense of where they have come from and where they want to go next, I am also honouring the stories of those who came before us.

Why I do what I do

I never set out with a plan of where my career would take me, instead I have been led by my own intuition.

My journey into becoming a therapist began with a simple but enduring curiosity: what makes us who we are? That curiosity developed into a passion for creating a space where people can explore the parts of themselves that may have been silenced, overlooked or been misunderstood.

My therapeutic journey began as a voluntary bereavement advisor with Cruse Bereavement Care, where I stepped into the the homes of people who had experienced a bereavement, whether through natural causes or fatality. From meeting my first client in 2013, I knew I had found a path which would change the entire trajectory, and I have never looked back since.

What I learned from this work was that the response clients received at the time of the death, how they were spoken to, and the type of support they received, all had a significant impact of what their grief journey would look like. It inspired me to take that learning beyond the space and out into the world.

For the past seven years, my clinical work has encompassed one-to-one and group therapeutic support. I have also worked with a national charity supporting families and parents bereaved by road deaths, which included facilitating an eight-week “building resilience” programme. In recent years, I have worked within a university counselling service offering psychological intervention to employees, and have also provided critical incident support to families attending a Public Hearing……

I never set out with a clear career plan. Instead, I followed a deep curiosity about what shapes us as human beings and a passion for creating spaces where people feel safe to explore the parts of themselves that have been silenced, overlooked, or misunderstood.

My journey began in 2013 as a volunteer bereavement advisor with Cruse Bereavement Care. Supporting people through loss taught me the profound impact that compassion, understanding, and connection can have during life's most difficult moments. It also inspired me to take that learning beyond bereavement and into therapeutic practice.

Over the past seven years, I have provided both individual and group therapy across a range of settings, including bereavement services, higher education, and trauma-informed support. Through this work, I have witnessed the full spectrum of human experience and the remarkable capacity people have for healing, growth, and change.

I believe resilience is not about being untouched by adversity or simply "moving on." Rather, it is the gentle process of making sense of our experiences, reconnecting with ourselves, and discovering that meaning, connection, and hope remain possible, even after life's most challenging chapters.

In my work as a therapist, I encounter the full spectrum of human experience. I see despair and hope, connection, violence, loneliness, tenderness and contempt. I meet people who feel trapped in deeply ingrained patterns and people who feel profoundly alone, sometimes even in the presence of the person closest to them. But I also have the privilege of watching people begin to understand themselves differently.

I have learnt that resilience is not about being untouched by adversity, where we are forcing to “move on”. Sometimes resilience is much quieter. It is the gradual process of finding our footing again, understanding ourselves with greater compassion, and discovering that there can still be life beyond the chapters we never chose for ourselves.

What’s next?

What gets me out of bed in the morning is a genuine curiosity and zest about people.

Through my work, I like to help people feel understood, confront their joys and pains, and be motivated to change. All this gives me energy when I wake up in the morning.

I don't think we ever reach the end of understanding what it means to be human. There will always be another story, another perspective and something new to learn and with this I realise, that my clients will always be at the heart of what I do, and what my internal world represents.

Growing older doesn't frighten me, having a old mindset does! So, as long as my mind remains curious and I can continue to connect meaningfully with another people, I intend to keep doing the work I love until my last breath!

Thank you for taking the time to read my story.
